Politics and God’s Purpose
Read Luke 2:1–7
And everyone went to his own town to register (Luke 2:3).
Taxation is a term understood by most adults worldwide. Perhaps that is why Luke explained the reason for Joseph and Mary’s presence in Bethlehem in a political way rather than addressing Jesus’ genealogy.
Government decrees have driven men like the Nobel prize winning author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn away from their countries to accomplish their missions. Other ideologies have sent citizens underground to worship God only to discover persecution is profitable to church growth.
God uses governments to fulfill His will. Micah prophesied, more than 600 years before Christ, that the promised Ruler would come from Bethlehem. Caesar Augustus had no idea he was facilitating the purpose of Almighty God.
We may not agree with, or even understand, the bills signed into laws in our country. But we are admonished to pray for those in authority. Pray now, and pray often, that the gospel will continue to be spread around the world.
Prayer Suggestion: Lord, help me to be faithful to prepare others for Your second coming.
